Oman steps up drive against plastics

Oman has launched a six-month campaign against plastic use, in order to protect its fauna, said an environmental expert.

Oman 's sea birds, marine mammals, turtles and land mammals such as goats, are at risk as they ingest plastic bags, Sayida Tania Bint Shabib Al, president of the Environment Society of Oman (ESO), was quoted as saying in the Gulf News report.

'No To Plastic Bags For Oman' is ESO's latest campaign to educate Oman residents to cut down and reuse plastic bags and move to more eco-friendly bags like jute. 'Plastic bags are a serious threat to the environment. Not only do they spoil our landscape and oceans, but they can also take up to 1000 years to break down. Plastic bags do not biodegrade, meaning they break down into smaller and smaller bits contaminating soil and oceans and entering the food chain when ingested by animals,' she explained.

The ESO has tied up with the Oman LNG for the latest drive against plastic bags. The campaign is also fully supported by Oman's Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs.
